Winter Season Readiness
Just like a car or truck, the winter months are tough on your generator. Freezing temperatures can wreak havoc on generator components such as batteries, fuel regulators, bearings, hoses, and more.
The first line of defense against being left in the dark is regular preventive maintenance and inspection of your standby power equipment.

Winter is the Season Where Batteries Fail the Most
If your generator battery is more than three years old, it will most likely fail during the first wave of cold/freezing weather.
Think ahead and replace that old battery now instead of scrambling during a big ice storm or major snow fall.
Is the Generator Heater Operating Properly?
If these devices are not working properly, especially during the winter months, the generator may develop abnormal engine wear, may not start when needed, or may start, struggle to run, then shutoff.
Oil Type and Oil Level
It may surprise you to know that many so-called “generator technicians” do not follow the manufacturer’s recommendation for oil. Your oil’s viscosity could be too thin or too thick causing oil flow problems.
If severe enough, these flow problems can cause nuisance generator alarms and/or abnormal engine wear. Also, oil level is critical to proper generator operation. If the oil level is too high, damage to oil seals can occur or oil can work its way into the air filter housing and clog the air filter.
This may cause a variety of issues from fouled ignition components to thick, blue exhaust smoke (due to oil burning in the engine cylinders).
Make sure you always have the proper oil and oil level, especially during the harsh winter season.
